Bunker Wollenberg Sonderobjekt 301
Wollenberg Bunker
The Wollenberg bunker is a bunker complex located near Bad Freienwalde (Oder) in Brandenburg. It was designed to protect the military tropospheric radio center 301, one of the three similar systems constructed in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) during the mid-1980s. Nowadays it’s a very special museum under the name of Militärgeschichtes Sonderobjekt 301 Wollenberg e. V.
Other Tropospheric Radio Systems
The other two systems were:
- Tropospheric Radio Station 302: Located in the municipality of Langsdorf, near Bad Sülze.
- Tropospheric Radio Center 303: Located in Röhrsdorf, near Königsbrück.
These facilities were integral parts of the Warsaw Pact’s BARS strategic tropospheric intelligence system.
Technical Specifications
The technical area of the Wollenberg bunker consisted of a two-story bunker with the following specifications:
- Protection Class: Classified in protection class D according to the VA classification.
- Dimensions: Approximately 30 × 30 meters.
Protection class D corresponded to the overpressure of a nuclear weapon detonation of 30 N/cm², which is roughly the effect of a concrete-piercing bomb containing 250 kg of explosives.
Cover Story
The official cover story for the Wollenberg bunker was its supposed use as a meteorological station for military aviation.
Historical Context
The Wollenberg bunker and its counterparts played a crucial role in the Cold War era, serving as key nodes in the Warsaw Pact’s military communication and intelligence infrastructure. These bunkers were designed to withstand significant military assaults, reflecting the strategic importance of maintaining communication capabilities in the event of a nuclear conflict.
